TEDx Neath Port Talbot launches Nov 2018

By Lydia Hutton on October 9th, 2018

TEDx Neath Port Talbot launches it’s inaugural event next month, thanks to the hard work of our Senior Business Manager, Joseph Murphy and TEDx NPT Co-Founder, Mei Lewis.

We’re thrilled to be supporting the project, which will host conversations around global events that resonate at a local level, and look to the sharing of ideas and collaboration for the greater good of the region.

If you haven’t attended a TEDx event before, what can you expect?

For starters, the talks are vetted, not anyone can just stand up. While they encourage speakers from all walks of life, backgrounds, job role etc, they focus on delivering interesting, topical and thought provoking presentations to ignite discussion and collaboration. Topics may vary drastically from speaker to speaker, yet they are designed to get the audience thinking, to provoke action in the form of conversation, and connect the audience with one another through the sharing of ideas and thoughts.

There are two rules for TEDx talks - 1, they must be under 18 minutes and 2, they must be well formed. This works as it stops the audience mind from wandering as you’re required to concentrate for a short period of time. The talks are more than just a good story - they fall into one of two categories

  • Something that’s new and surprising; an idea or invention that your audience has never heard about
  • A great basic idea (that your audience has maybe already heard) with a compelling new argument behind it that challenges beliefs and perspectives

Why should you attend?

This is a chance to meet innovators, community champions and big-thinkers in your local area, and start conversations that could benefit the area. The first of the speakers have now been announced - which include an ultra-marathon runner and Guinness World Record holder, a University Professor who specialises in Global Governance and a PhD lecturer & researcher who is a fan of big-data and the social relevance of auditing.

The full line up will be available closer to the date. As a colleague, Joseph’s passion for collaboration, entrepreneurship and ideas is infectious - so we’ve no doubt the speakers selected for the launch night will bring enormous value to the political, economic and social landscape of Port Talbot.

For us at Simply Do Ideas, this is a really exciting concept. We strongly believe in collaboration, that ideas often grow better when transplanted into a mind, other than the one they were first formed in. If an auditorium holds 100 minds, what can they achieve together for their local area, than if they are not connected and collaborating?
